A Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Nurse who integrates clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine in order to assess, diagnose and manage patients in primary healthcare (PHC) settings and acute care populations as well as ongoing care for populations with chronic illness (ICN, 2020)
Nurse practitioners understand and respect the importance of family and community in maintaining wellness and in creating caring relationships. Their comprehensive approach to wellness places individuals at the very centre of care delivery.
To ensure holistic care for all, nurse practitioners integrate knowledge gained through research, theory, clinical expertise, individuals and their families, colleagues, collaborators, and self-reflection. Nurse practitioners serve a meaningful role in improving access to care for all Islanders.
The Prince Edward Island Nurse Practitioner Association (PEINPA) is a non-profit, volunteer-led special interest group that supports and advances the professional interests of its membership: nurse practitioners (NPs) and nurse practitioner students. PEINPA facilitates the efforts of NPs to provide accessible, efficient and effective healthcare at the highest standards of practice.
